Inpatient addiction rehabs provide a therapeutically controlled environment where substance abusers can concentrate solely on defeating their substance abuse disorder. Also called residential addiction treatment centers, inpatient treatment patients remain at the center 24/7 until they have been approved for discharge. Length of stay in an inpatient rehab program ranges from several weeks to several months, depending on the severity of the addiction. Dual diagnosis patients (those with serious mental health issues and addictions) are often transitioned into an intensive outpatient program after completing residential treatment.

Is Inpatient Addiction Rehab Effective?

One of the newer, systematic reviews of inpatient addiction rehab efficacy published in Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy found that patients completing their substance abuse treatment in a residential rehab center showed “general progress in mental health, improved employment status and significant decreases in substance abuse in the weeks following their discharge”.

Inpatient rehab is highly recommended for substance abusers who have a history of relapsing after completing an outpatient program. Recovering in a structured, safe environment like a residential treatment center prevents patients from accessing three main things responsible for relapse: people from which they can get drugs or alcohol; stressful situations that can trigger relapse; and environments conducive to addiction (corner bars, carry-outs, high-drug trafficking areas).

If you or someone you know has tried to stop using drugs in the past, has emotional or mental health problems and is dealing with legal issues related to substance abuse, contact us today to learn more about inpatient addiction rehab.

Detoxifying Before Entering a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program

Medically supervised detox programs are supervised by physicians, psychiatrists and experienced addiction counselors who provide support for the patient during the detoxification process. A typical detox takes from two to five days, depending on the severity and length of the patient’s addiction, and involves eliminating all traces of drugs and/or alcohol from the patient’s system. A complete physical examination is given before and after entering detox. Appropriate medications are provided to address health problems and relieve withdrawal symptoms.

What is Inpatient Addiction Rehab Like?

Daytime hours at a residential addiction treatment center consist of cognitive behavioral therapy, group and individual therapy, counseling sessions and holistic activities such as music, drawing and painting. Physical activity is also an important part of any substance abuse recovery plan. Patients are encouraged exercise daily. Nutritional meals are provided that can be tailored to a patient’s special health needs.

Activities may also include:

  • Meditation and spiritual counseling sessions
  • Writing assignments, such as keeping a daily journal
  • Recreational activities with other members (playing board or card games in the evening)
  • Participating in other activities as advised by counselors and therapists that may further help patients complete their substance abuse recovery program.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse prevention therapy at inpatient rehab involves teaching patients a number of alternative responses to environmental or personal “triggers” that may lead to relapse. For example, people in substance abuse recovery may be tempted to relapse by simply seeing the neighborhood bar they use to frequent or talking to a friend who still uses drugs. Residential treatment centers give people the chance to learn how to correctly use coping behaviors to significantly reduce their risk of relapse after completing their rehab program.
