Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient Treatment

What Is Outpatient Rehab for Drugs and Alcohol?

When an individual chooses to seek out treatment for addiction to drugs or alcohol, an outpatient rehab program may be the best approach depending on the situation. Outpatient rehab sees the individual attending various types of sessions in person at America’s Rehab Campus before returning home to resume their normal day-to-day life. These sessions include group and individual therapy, substance abuse education and cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT.

Unlike inpatient rehab or sober living homes outpatient treatment plans allow participants to retain more freedom and independence while on the road to sobriety. Outpatient rehab does not require one to live at the treatment center on a full-time basis meaning they’re able to keep their current responsibilities and still receive the help they need in a private and confidential setting. Outpatient rehab is also much more accessible than inpatient regarding both the time and financial commitment.

Who Does Outpatient Rehab Work Best For?

Oftentimes outpatient rehab is the most affordable and effective option for addressing addiction and substance abuse. There are, however, times when a more intense option such as inpatient rehab or partial hospitalization is the better choice. At America’s Rehab Campus, our team prioritizes the needs of the patient above all else when working with them to create the perfect treatment plan. Outpatient rehab is suggested when there is a healthy and supportive home environment to return to and the individual is not suffering from severe mental health issues on top of their struggles with drugs or alcohol.

Another factor in determining if outpatient rehab is the proper option is how intense the withdrawal period will be for the individual. Those who have heavily abused certain substances like alcohol or benzodiazepines may experience substantial withdrawal symptoms as the body detoxes from the substance. If left untreated, these symptoms can be extremely painful and uncomfortable or even fatal in severe cases. For these individuals, inpatient rehab along with medically assisted detox is the safest and most effective course of action. If you aren’t sure which option is best for you or a loved one, you can give our team a call for a confidential consultation at any time.

Outside of these scenarios, outpatient treatment will likely be the starting point when drafting a patient’s customized treatment plan. It allows them to continue their job, schooling and family commitments while using the skills and lessons learned during educational and therapeutic counseling sessions. The individual also doesn’t have to divulge their treatment to employers or family members and can maintain that privacy until they are comfortable sharing their story.

What Can I Expect From Outpatient Rehab?

Thankfully, outpatient programs provide the same level of care as its inpatient counterpart but without the need for total immersion. Treatment is also made to work around the patient’s existing schedule to cause the least amount of disruption possible while maintaining the necessary level of care. There are different pillars of outpatient rehab that help ensure a successful treatment program which our team builds upon when tailoring treatment to each patient.

Medically Assisted Therapy

During treatment, medication may be prescribed to help address withdrawal symptoms that don’t require hospitalization or mental health issues brought on by the absence of drugs or alcohol. Depending on the type of medication utilized, the patient may be required to take it on-site under the supervision of recovery staff.

Intervention and Counseling Sessions

Both group and individual therapy sessions are held regularly and create the foundation of any outpatient rehab program. These give the patient a chance to discover the underlying drive behind their addictive behavior as well as sharing their story with others in hopes of receiving new insights and points of view. Interventions and group counseling remind the individual that they aren’t alone in their fight with substance abuse.

Life Skill Workshops

Falling outside of traditional therapy are educational services that focus on building the skills needed in order to live a successful life free of drugs and alcohol. Patients will attend workshops on resume building, social interactions, financial literacy and job hunting to help them secure gainful employment after treatment. These workshops and the aforementioned therapy sessions create a network of support through peer and mentor connections that can last a lifetime. Are There Different Types of Outpatient Treatment?

Since no two cases of addiction or substance abuse are exactly the same, there are indeed varying levels of outpatient rehab that can be adjusted to the needs of the patient. Each plan creation will be based on the substance being abused, the amount of time it’s been used, how severe chemical and physical dependencies have become and if there is a dual diagnosis of addiction and another mental health concern.

A standard outpatient treatment plan will see the patient committing to sessions 5-7 times a week for 1-2 hours or more depending on the level of care needed. Therapy sessions, skill-building workshops and recreational activities are all utilized during these programs to help patients establish a basis for sober living. This level of outpatient rehab is often referred to as a day program and requires more time than other outpatient options.

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOP, are better suited for those who need to retain their independence during regular business hours to continue working, attending school or taking care of their family. As a more flexible option, IOPs at America’s Rehab Campus last for 12 weeks with 3 days required each week. Each of the 3 days will have 3 hours of treatment included, after which the patient is able to go about their normal routine.

Each treatment program administered by our team also comes with access to continued care through a network of support groups and mental health professionals. These different resources are key in aiding relapse prevention as addiction is a lifelong condition. When given the proper tools and support, future cravings and impulses are of little concern as the individual will have been empowered to stay strong in the face of adversity.
