About TRICARE for Drug Rehab
TRICARE is a health insurance program that provides comprehensive coverage for active and retired uniformed service members and their families. TRICARE is managed and overseen by the Defense Health Agency, and offers health plans that meet the requirements for minimum coverage as enforced under the Affordable Care Act.
Those who have TRICARE and who need help recovering from drug and alcohol abuse may receive partial or full coverage for the following addiction treatment services:
- Inpatient residential drug and alcohol rehab,
- Medical detox,
- Medication-assisted treatment,
- Opioid treatment,
- Dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders treatment,
- Partial hospitalization programs, and
- Intensive outpatient programs.
TRICARE only covers addiction treatment services that are medically necessary, which means the services must be proven, reasonable, appropriate, and sufficient for treating your condition. TRICARE does not provide coverage for aversion therapy or unproven addiction treatments.

- Being over 21 years of age,
- Being unable to function in the community with outpatient rehab,
- Do not require full-time hospitalization,
- Suffer from a co-occurring disorder such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder, and
- Suffer from a serious impairment that interferes with day-to-day functioning.
