What is Enabling?

Enabling is a behavior pattern where individuals, often with good intentions, support a loved one’s substance use disorder by protecting them from the consequences of their actions. This can include providing money that is ultimately used to buy drugs or alcohol, making excuses for missed obligations, or denying the severity of the addiction problem.

In the context of addiction and mental health, enabling disrupts recovery because it allows the person struggling with addiction to avoid facing the impact of their behavior. Family members or friends may enable out of love or fear, but the result is often a prolonged cycle of substance abuse and avoidance of treatment.

Enabling can become a serious obstacle to recovery. Professional intervention and therapy often include educating loved ones on setting boundaries and supporting recovery without enabling addictive behavior. Understanding and addressing enabling behavior is essential in any effective addiction treatment plan.
