It’s that time of year again where friends, family and loved ones start gathering for huge feasts and festive parties. There’s always something to talk about and people to catch up with, but all of the added pressure and stress that comes with the season can make it difficult to enjoy if you’re in recovery. From the increased social interactions to the financial obligations felt to purchase everyone a gift, there’s no shortage of extra stress during the holidays.
If you happen to be going through recovery this holiday season, or know someone who is, here are some ways to help get through unscathed and even stronger than before.
Don’t Let Yourself Lose Track of the Goal
Having fun during the holidays often comes with the inclusion of alcohol, whether it be wine during dinner or spiked eggnog at a winter party. If it’s too difficult to be near alcohol, try talking to the host to see if they can include non-alcoholic options or remove the trigger entirely. While this can’t always work, it’s important to try as you deserve to be able to enjoy your time as well.
Another important part of relapse prevention during the holidays is not letting yourself get caught up in the festivities. At no point should you consider drinking, as even just one instance can lead to a full relapse. If someone offers you a drink, politely decline it and go back to the party. There’s no need to explain why you aren’t drinking if you don’t feel like doing so.
If you start feeling overwhelmed at any point, find something to do like helping prepare food or cleaning up while you take some time to decompress. Step outside for some fresh air or talk to someone you trust and see if they’ll help keep an eye out for you during the event. Having someone there to help keep you grounded and focused on having fun over drinking can make it much easier to get through the holidays during recovery.
