Medical Detox for Drugs and Alcohol

The list of the top five addictive drugs may surprise you. They include nicotine, which is among the most widespread and legal drugs in the United States. Learn more about these drugs and how you can get help at America’s Rehab Campuses to overcome substance abuse disorders.

Heroin

Heroin is known as a highly addictive substance. When you introduce it into your body, it binds with a part of the brain called opioid receptors. This stimulates pleasure and the production of dopamine in a way that inhibits your body from creating dopamine on its own. If you try to stop using heroin on your own, you may suffer from severe withdrawal symptoms, including depression, physical pain, hallucinations, and depression.

Crack Cocaine

Crack cocaine is made of the same substance as regular cocaine. However, crack cocaine is snorted instead of smoked or injected. The high lasts for about 10 minutes and over time you need more and more of the drug to get the same effect. The withdrawal effects of crack cocaine include anger, depression and anxiety and can become extreme.

We offer individual treatment plans at our drug addiction treatment center in Tucson.

Nicotine

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances available legally in the United States. It may be more addictive than crystal meth according to one study. Nicotine stimulates neurotransmitters in your brain, which makes you want to consume more of it. Withdrawal symptoms from nicotine, as any smoker who’s tried to quit knows, include headaches, anxiety, and mood swings. Chewing tobacco and cigarettes are the most common source of nicotine.

Methadone

Like all opiates, methadone is highly addictive. However, it’s been considered a cleaner and healthier substitute for heroin and cocaine since it’s slightly less addictive. Methadone is sometimes used in medically assisted detox for those with opiate use disorders. Unfortunately, it’s still possible to become addicted if prescriptions are abused.

Crystal Meth

Crystal meth is a type of methamphetamine that actually teaches your brain to crave more of the drug. When you smoke crystal meth, you stimulate neurotransmitters that produce norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals create a feeling of focus and alertness. However, it is short-lived it makes it hard for your brain to produce its own chemicals that enable focus and pleasure.
